Buffalo City, Wisconsin is located on a slough of the Mississippi River with beautiful views across the river, Spring Lake and Whitman Bottoms. Back in the day Buffalo City was situated with more direct access to the main channel of the Mississippi but with the changing river bed is today situated on Pomme de Terre Slough, Belvidere Slough and Spring Lake, part of the Mississippi. Great for fishing, boating, kayaking and birding.
History Chartered in 1859, Buffalo City is the oldest incorporated city in Buffalo County and was founded by the General Colonization Society of Cincinnati, Ohio. Buffalo County’s first jail was built in 1862, this historic building is located in Buffalo City Park.
Touring By Bike, Motorcycle or Car you’ll find a favorite sunset spot along River Road (Buffalo County Road OO) and the Mississippi River shoreline. A birding hot spot in Buffalo County, look for Bald Eagles and many more water birds. In the 1860’s the Colonization Society took on a huge project and built a road from Buffalo City across the Belvidere Bluff to the Waumandee Valley, today that road is Buffalo County Road O and a beautiful drive to Wisconsin State Highway 88.
Fishing is easily accessible by boat with 3 landings: Spring Lake Landing, Buffalo City Boat Landing & Belvidere Slough Landing. In the winter Buffalo City is a favorite for ice fishing.

The annual ice fishing contest is hosted by the Community Action Committee every January. Kids and adults can both enter to catch fish and win prizes!

4th of July Parade & Fireworks
Celebrate Independence Day with Buffalo City, WI! The Community Action Committee organizes an annual parade and firework show for the 4th of July with lots of fun for the whole family.
The Flag Memorial
County Road O, Cochrane, Wisconsin
Since 2005, a flag flies in honor of each Wisconsin hero who has died in Iraq or Afghanistan at The Flag Memorial. See this Memorial on display along County Highway O as you leave Cochrane and head toward Buffalo City, Wisconsin each national holiday, weather permitting, including Mother’s Day & Father’s Day. The Memorial was started by volunteers July 4th, 2005 after the death of a local friend in Iraq. 13 years later, the Memorial is still in place and has grown in size to over 150 flags. Seeing the flags is humbling and the families of the fallen are appreciative of the effort… that’s why the Memorial continues.
