Waumandee, Wisconsin was part of the rural frontier of 1850’s Wisconsin located in the center of Buffalo County. The name is translated as “War Eagle” from the Sioux or “clear & sparkling water” from the Chippewa … the source has been lost but both apply to Waumandee Valley.
Touring By Bike, Motorcycle or Car Beautiful scenery and a great “back road” trip awaits the traveler to Waumandee through the valley up the steep slopes and across the high ridges on Buffalo County’s paved road system and along Wisconsin State Highway 88 up County Road E and County Road U.
Trout Streams Are you after the elusive trout? Buffalo County offers over 8,000 acres of water and 73 trout streams. Waumandee Creek & Little Waumandee Creek (Class II Trout Streams) carve through the Waumandee Valley and flow to the Mississippi River.
History Harmonia Hall & Park, a National Historic Site, was organized in 1861 as the local “singing society”. The Waumandee House, constructed in 1879, was a hotel during much of its history and today is a restaurant. St Boniface Church was established in 1862 and the current church building was constructed in 1887. Waumandee Mill was built in 1863 as a flour mill powered by Waumandee Creek, it is the oldest mill still standing in Western Wisconsin and is privately owned. Montana Salem United Methodist Church was organized in 1863, the current building was built in 1918.
